When the River Garden Closes, Athens Moves Up to Second Street

October 22, 2026

From now until spring, the Village of Athens is centered one block uphill from the river. The waterfront places that filled summer evenings have closed for the season, and Second Street now carries everyday life. Between the bread counter at number 30 and the library at number 80, the street keeps a fuller schedule than most residents would expect in November, as long as they know which days count.

The schedule follows a clear pattern. Almost every food and drink spot on Second Street opens Thursday through Monday. By posted hours, Thursday and Saturday are the two days when every place in this post is open. Tuesday and Wednesday are the quiet days, with just one dinner spot and the library open.

The Water Street Side Has Gone Quiet

The Stewart House at 2 North Water Street lists its River Garden as closed for the season. That's the willow-shaded outdoor bar on the river. This summer it shared the space with the Tommy Boy Korean food truck, which the Stewart House also lists as closed for the season. Chronogram covered the truck in July 2025, when it served kimbap in the River Garden and was expected to run into the fall.

The rest of the river's season has ended too:

  • The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society's last listed 2026 tour departed from Hudson on Saturday, October 24.
  • The Hudson Ferry Co. ticket page shows no availability for October 2026.
  • At 11 North Water Street, the former Dionysus restaurant has been demolished, and the lot is now a construction site for Garden for Brice.

The Stewart House doesn't close with the garden. The hotel stays open seven days a week. Its 1883 Tavern serves dinner Thursday through Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m., staying open until 9 on holiday weekends. That makes it the only spot on Water Street that's still open at night, and it falls on the same Thursday-to-Sunday rhythm as Second Street.

The Second Street Week, Day by Day

Here are the currently posted hours for the Second Street spots, plus the Tavern around the corner:

The table explains winter in Athens. On Thursday, a whole day is possible on one street. Breakfast is at The Athens Rooster, Catskill Bread Co. opens at noon, the library stays open until 6, and four dinner options open between 4 and 4:30. Saturday is almost as full, with the library closing at 2. The Rooster also sells more than breakfast. Its cafe has a small pantry shelf and frozen house-made entrées. Catskill Bread Co. reopens pre-orders on Wednesdays at noon, so the Thursday counter can be reserved ahead of time.

Midweek is a much smaller schedule. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Night School is the only dinner option on this list, with pizza, cocktails and beer from 4 p.m. The D. R. Evarts Library stays open until 7 on Tuesday, its latest evening of the week. Stella's Pizzeria at 6 South Water Street offers online ordering, but its site doesn't post local hours, so call ahead.

The Calendar Lives on Second Street Too

Most of the village calendar between now and mid-December happens at two Second Street addresses, the library at number 80 and the Athens Cultural Center at number 24. Here are the dated events, in order:

  1. Friday, October 30, 6–8 p.m. The library hosts a Drop Dead Disco Murder Mystery Party.
  2. Saturday, October 31, 8–11 p.m. The Stewart House holds a Halloween costume party, with the 1883 Tavern serving dinner beforehand from 4 to 7:30.
  3. Thursdays in November, 10:30–11:30 a.m. Library Littles Playgroup meets on November 5, 12, 19 and 26.
  4. Friday, November 6. Small Works, the Cultural Center's members' exhibition, opens on a First Friday and runs through December 13.
  5. Saturdays, November 7 and 14, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Dungeons & Dragons at the library.
  6. November 23, 28 and 30, and December 5. The Cultural Center hosts holiday sign-painting sessions ahead of the Victorian Stroll.
  7. Wednesday, November 25. The Cultural Center's Queer & Trans Connection Network meets. The listing gives 6–7 p.m. and the recurring description says 6–8 p.m., so check the time before you go.
  8. Friday, December 4. The second First Friday of the Small Works run.

The library calendar also lists a Mending Circle on Thursday, October 29, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The FASNY Museum of Firefighting held a free Trunk-or-Treat with local fire companies on October 24, but that event takes place at the museum, outside the village.

The sign-painting sessions connect November to December. The signs painted at 24 Second Street in late November are made for the street itself, and the street fills on one afternoon in mid-December.

December 12 Brings Everyone Back to the River

The free Athens Victorian Stroll runs Saturday, December 12, from 1 to 5 p.m. across the Lower Village and the Second Street area. It ends at 5 p.m. with a tree lighting and caroling in Riverfront Park at 1 South Water Street. It's the one winter event on the calendar that brings the village back down to the water. The detailed schedule is still listed as coming soon.

Small Works stays up for one more day after the Stroll, closing December 13. The Cultural Center's next show, Winter Light, opens December 19 and runs through January 24, 2027.

What Will Eventually Change on Water Street

Garden for Brice is the project that could someday give Water Street a winter schedule. It's a public garden built in memory of the artist Brice Marden, on the riverfront lot where Dionysus once stood. The plans call for a free, year-round public garden of about an acre and a 2,075-square-foot counter-service cafe and bar. The menu would include hot dogs, seasonal salads and locally sourced ice cream, and there would be a patio for summer and an indoor fireplace for the colder months. The new concession building sits above projected flood levels. The old asphalt parking lot has been replaced with a landscape designed to handle stormwater and tidal surges, and a stone revetment now lines the riverbank.

The opening date is still open. The state's NY Forward plan, dated December 2025, put construction at about 50 percent complete and projected an opening before the end of 2026. In June 2026, the Albany Business Review described the project as "about a year from completion." The project's own site, which includes a drone photo dated October 10, 2026, still describes the concession building as under construction and gives no opening date. On the posted schedules, Water Street won't have a fireplace café this winter.

The money for this kind of change is already committed. In May 2026, the Governor's office announced $4.5 million in NY Forward awards for Athens, including $550,000 for the Garden for Brice project. The other awards include a Riverfront Park access hub, an expansion of the Athens Cultural Center, a restaurant, brewery and event venue with apartments at the Brooks Opera House, an events venue at Trinity Church, and waterfront intersection improvements. The plan estimated about 24 months for the park access hub, with design still preliminary at the time. These projects are funded but don't have opening dates yet. For this winter, Athens runs Thursday through Monday on Second Street.

Athens's slow season has a schedule of its own, and the waterfront projects will change it a little each year. If you're weighing a home in Athens or Coxsackie, or wondering how projects like Garden for Brice might affect your own block, Angela Lanuto and our team follow these changes up close and are happy to talk through them.
